Some symptoms and signs can be suggestive for gastrointestinal disorders.
If you have any of the following symptoms or signs, please consult your doctor, because you need gastroenterological examination:
• Heartburn
• Acid regurgitation
• Dysphagia (trouble swallowing)
• Odynophagia (pain during swallowing)
• Atypical chest pain
• Chronic cough
• Hoarseness, throat clearing (reflux laryngitis)
• Asthma
• Chronic abdominal pain, discomfort
• Abdominal bloating
• Nausea, vomiting
• Chronic diarrhoea
• Chronic constipation
• Blood in the stool or black stool
• Change in bowel habit (new-onset diarrhoea or constipation)
• Reduction in diameter of stool
• Feeling of incomplete defecation
In the presence of “alarm” symptoms (listed below) you need urgent gastroenterological investigation:
• Weight loss
• Loss of appetite
• Iron deficiency anemia (caused by chronic occult bleeding)
• Dysphagia (trouble swallowing)
• Chronic vomiting
• Blood in the stool or black stool
• Change in bowel habit
• Unexplained abdominal pain
• Jaundice, pale stools.
